Michael Lupacchino is an independent dance educator and choreographer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Originally from New England, Michael began his dance career at the age of two at his aunt’s studio in Connecticut when his mom enrolled him and his twin brother in a tap class. At the studio, Michael studied acro-gymnastics, jazz, and tap dance. In high school he was a member of the Radio Disney Dance Team, choreographed for two choral concerts, and served as co-dance captain his senior year for the school’s show choir.

In college, Michael minored in dance and began taking ballet and modern classes in addition to furthering his studies in jazz. It was at Emerson where he discovered a passion for contemporary dance. Michael restarted the Emerson Dance Company (EDC) in the fall of 2007 and served as the organization’s president for almost three years. In addition to choreographing for EDC, Michael created two original dance theatre works for Emerson Stage’s X-Dance in 2009 and 2010. He won an EVVY award for “Outstanding Choreography” for his work in X-Dance 2009. Additional choreographic credits include movement and choreography for The Merchant of Venice and Twelfth Night for the Emerson Shakespeare Society.
After college, Michael created works for DanceWorks Boston and OnStage Dance Company. He returned to his aunt’s studio as a coach and choreographer for the studio’s competition team and to teach contemporary, jazz, and lyrical. Wanting to further his dance education, Michael headed to California for his MFA in Dance where he studied somatics and focused his research on the intersections of the male dancing body, queer studies, women and gender studies, and sociology.

Michael was a featured speaker for a panel discussion at the first-ever “Men in Dance” conference presented by the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) in 2017 and presented on the history of lyrical dance at the NDEO special topics conference “Jazz Dance: Hybrids, Fusions, Connections, Community” in 2019. He has showcased choreography and taught master classes throughout New England and California. Most recently, he created choreography and movement for Inferno Theatre Company’s fall 2019 production of Ovid’s Metamorphoses in Berkeley, CA.

Michael holds a BS in Marketing Communication from Emerson College and an MFA in Dance: Creative Practice from Saint Mary’s College of California as well as Graduate Certificate in Dance Production Management. He has served on the faculty at the Anita Deprey Studio of Dance, the California Academy of the Performing Arts, and was a professor and guest lecturer for undergraduate dance courses at Saint Mary's College of California.
